Do you want to join our Pack?
Each year when school starts, we provide information about how to join Pack 1831 to all boys entering grades 1 through 5 at Sudley, Sinclair, Loch Lomond and Mullen and Westgate Elementary schools in Manassas, VA.

Boys can also join at any time during the year, not just in the fall. You can contact us at pack1831@gmail.com for more information.

Fun with a Purpose:
Learning with Incentives
Cub Scouting means "doing." You will have lots to do as a Cub Scout in Pack 1831--crafts, games, sports, songs, stories, puzzles and much more! A lot of the fun happens right in the den and pack.

Everything boys do in Cub Scouting has a purpose. Apart from the fun and excitement, the aim of Cub Scouting is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit. This is why we say that Cub Scouting is fun with a purpose.
The den, a group of Cub Scouts in your age and grade level, usually meets every week or every other week.

The Pack, all Cub Scouts from first to fifth grade, meets once a month from September to June.

Cub Scouts in Pack 1831 have a lot of activities in which to participate. Traditional annual events include the Space Derby in October, Manassas Christmas Parade in December, Pinewood Derby in January, Blue and Gold banquet in February and the Rainwater Regatta in June.

We also go camping, hiking and have other kinds of outdoor adventures all year round, including a busy summer scouting schedule.

We practice citizenship by taking part in community events, marching in parades, volunteering with community projects, and helping out when asked.

Cub Scouts do all sorts of exciting things! Whatever it is that you enjoy, you'll probably have a chance to do it in Cub Scouting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions about our pack:

What Does It Cost to Join?
The membership fee for new Cub Scouts is $50, payable when you register. (This amount is prorated for Cubs who join later in the Scouting year and there is a discount for multiple scouts from the same family)

Out of these funds, the pack pays for:
•    Registration fees and insurance for Scouts and adult leaders
•    Advancement patches, pins and other awards for Scouts
•    Trophies, ribbons, space derby, pinewood derby, and rainwater regatta kits and banquet supplies.
•    Copies and general pack supplies

For information about Pack 1831 fundraisers, which help both the boys and pack pay for scouting, click on the "Fundraising" tab to the left.

What are the uniform requirements?
We require our Cub Scouts to wear the official Class A uniform to Pack meetings, when fundraising and when walking in parades, at flag raisings, Scouting for Food, and other official scouting activities.

The official uniform as follows:
•    Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, and Bear Cubs must wear the official uniform blue shirt, neckerchief, slide, hat and belt.
•    Webelos may choose the blue or khaki official uniform shirt, Webelos neckerchief , slide and belt.
•    Navy blue pants, shorts or jeans.
•    National Capital Area Council Shoulder Patch, Pack 1831 Red Numerals, World Scouting Patch (purple circle), Den Numeral

Boys also have the option of wearing Pack 1831 t-shirts during Den meetings and "dirty" community service, such as neighborhood and steam clean ups. Boys and parents can also wear the Pack t-shirts to camping events.

The Pack has t-shirts available for sale.  We also like to have parents wear their Pack t-shirts during pack-sponsored activities.

What is a Pack?
A pack is a group of Cub Scouts, adult leaders and parents who belong to the same Cub Scout unit (e.g., Pack 1831, Bull Run District, National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America). A pack generally draws its membership primarily from an elementary school, church or community that is associated with the pack's Chartered Organization and Community. Each pack is made up of Tiger Cub (grade 1), Wolf (grade 2), Bear (grade 3) and Webelos (grades 4 & 5) dens.

What is a Chartered Organization?
A Chartered Organization is the sponsoring organization for a Cub Scout pack, usually a church, PTA, homeowners' association or other community group. The primary responsibility of the Chartered Organization is work with the leadership of the pack and to provide a meeting place. Each year, the pack must renew its Charter with its local council. The Chartered Organization must approve the rechartering application in order for the Charter to be renewed. Pack 1831 is chartered to the Sudley Elementary School PTA in Manassas, VA.

What is a Den?
A den is a group of boys (ideally 6-8) of the same grade level. Each den meets on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to work on achievements and other activities. The den is led by an adult Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader, who are responsible for planning and conducting each den meeting.

When and Where are Pack Meetings Held?
Pack meetings are generally held monthly on the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. from September through June. Pack 1831 meets at Sudley Elementary School. The Pack Calendar provides exact dates, places and times of all pack meetings.

Who Runs the Pack?
The pack is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. We are always looking for people who would like to help out, and have large and small jobs for every member.
The Pack Committee, which currently consists of the Committee Chairman, Cubmaster, Secretary and the Treasurer, develops budgets, approves expenses, arranges for facilities and conducts overall planning.
•    The Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders are the most directly involved with the Cub Scouts. Dens generally meet weekly or bi-weekly, a Den Leaders meeting is held monthly to discuss plans for the upcoming month.
•    An adult member of each Cub Scout is expected to participate in a volunteer position or serve on a committee.

In addition to Pack Committee and Den Leader positions, Pack 1831 generally tries to fill numerous volunteer positions through the support of our parents. Lend your skills and make our Pack more fun for the Scouts! See the Parents page for ideas of how you can make our Pack more successful.
